Dear Parents:

The Mu Chapter of Sigma Pi at Cornell University recently celebrated 110 years of existence. It has over 65 undergraduate brothers, more than 1,350 alumni, and a strong and dedicated alumni board. It is part of Cornell’s Greek system, with an overall GPA of 3.501, making the chapter the fourth highest-ranked fraternity in terms of academic standing at the university. Mu Chapter is part of Sigma Pi International, which was founded in 1897 at Vincennes University in Vincennes, Indiana. Sigma Pi International comprises 123 active chapters, six colonies, and over 95,000 alumni.

The Mu Chapter of Sigma Pi represents Greek life at its highest levels, including academic achievement, philanthropy and community involvement, leadership and mentorship opportunities, and lifelong brotherhood.

History

In the spring of 1913, a group of 15 male Cornell undergraduates organized to form a fraternity, calling themselves the Alpha Chapter of Omega Delta. A house was leased at 636 Stewart Avenue (still standing) for the new brothers. In 1915, the growing fraternity purchased the house of a professor at 730 University Avenue for $20,000 for its 28 brothers. The new fraternity continued to flourish and soon petitioned Sigma Pi Fraternity of the United States to become a chapter. The petition was granted, and on May 18, 1917, the fraternity became the Mu Chapter of Sigma Pi.

To meet the needs of the growing fraternity, a new wing was added to the house in 1942, and a new kitchen, dining room, and front porch were added in 1958. A comprehensive remodeling project in 1994 ended in disaster as a workman’s error resulted in a fire that destroyed much of the house. Before the blaze was extinguished, the fraternity’s architect was told to start work on plans for an entirely new house, incorporating the parts of the house not destroyed by fire. The new and improved house was opened in 1999. To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the fraternity, over 250 alumni and undergraduates gathered for the Centennial Celebration, a weekend of festivities in the fall of 2013. We look forward to the next 100 years of Sigma Pi Fraternity at Cornell!
